Abstract

ABSTRACT

The Alisitos Formation, exposed in the Baja California Peninsula, is a volcano-sedimentary insular arc sequence. The sections studied at Los Torotes, La Bocana, El Cuervito and San José, expose stratigraphic columns of 500 to 3,500 m of interstratified basalt, andesite, dacite, rhyolite, pyroclastic acid rocks, grauwacke, silt, and biogenic rocks.

The paleontology, petrography, and lithologic associations have permitted chronostratigraphic correlations between Los Torotes-La Bocana and El Cuervito-San José areas of different sedimentologic characteristics. The first with a column of 5,000 m thickness is interpreted to be a deposit of insular arc margin. The second shows a clear contrast since its thickness is of 1,500 m and represents the sedimentation in an insular fore-arc basin... In order to continue, download the full paper in PDF.
